My Year in Photos – August 28th to September 5th

Since I wasn’t able to upload these photos on a daily basis during our holiday, I’m taking a break from the norm and lumping them together in to one big post. I might come back in and add some descriptions for each one tomorrow, but at the moment I’m quite tired and it’s school in the morning! :) So just enjoy the photos…

August 28th – The day we set out from England. Today’s shot shows a giant wasp attacking the Spinaker Tower in Portsmouth. Or that’s what it looked like anyway, when this fly landed on the window of the ferry as I was taking the photo!

August 29th – Our first whole day in France, we decided to put Sara’s ‘Where the best markets are and when’ research to the test by heading in to Baden. Either we got there too late (at about 10am!) or the market was actually rubbish. Either way, we headed to the nearby ‘Larmor Baden’ afterwards (also on the list) and they had a BRILLIANT market.

August 30th – Today’s shot was taken in the walled city of Vannes, where we spent most of the day. More specifically, inside the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Vannes – a beautiful cathedral with some very nice stained glass windows.

August 31st – Today’s shot was taken in a little village quite near to our gite, where I was driving in order to attempt to get Robert to sleep. It seemed like a lovely little church, hidden from the road by some trees, with nothing around it for miles.

September 1st – The standing stones at Carnac are a sight to be seen. Over a thousand ‘alignments’ placed several thousand years ago (around the time of Stone Henge, I believe) and all facing the sea. Pretty spectacular really!

September 2nd – After a failed attempt the day before (the beach at Carnac was like a wind tunnel), we finally managed a proper beach day today, heading to Quiberon on the peninsula. It was a lovely beach, with some very good surf from the look of these guys.

September 3rd – Despite it being my gorgeous wife’s birthday today, this is about the only sight I saw for most of the day, as I was struck down by either a stomach bug or food poisoning – we still haven’t really figured out which. The day started badly for both me (projectile vomiting across the room) and my wife (cleaning it all up) at 3am… It didn’t get much better after that!

September 4th – Our final day in France, and we decided to stop at the Bayeux Tapestry on the way back to the ferry. Today’s photo shows my son Robert posing next to the boat in the courtyard of the museum – or more accurately sneaking behind the rope surrounding said boat after we’d taken a nicer photo…!

September 5th – Holiday well and truly over, I headed to the cattery to pick up Holly and Daisy today, while Sara did the shopping. This is about the only interesting thing I saw all day, since the rest of it was spent doing EIGHT loads of washing! Oh well…

My Year in Photos – August 27th – “Roof boxing”

Well, my predicted roof box stress actually turned out to be fairly stress-free – the Thule we bought wasn’t cheap, but it was certainly nice and easy to fit!

If you think it looks wonky, PLEASE don’t tell me – I spent ages trying to straighten the bastard up so I’m a little paranoid about it…!

My Year in Photos – August 26th – “Is it Christmas already?!”

Following my realisation yesterday that it was only (!) four months until Christmas, today I spotted what may well be the oldest Christmas tree in the UK – or perhaps an early Christmas tree for somebody very miserly? It’s actually been on this house’s balcony for 8 months looking like this, and I only remembered it was there as I left work today. I reckon if they put a few bits of tinsel on it, that could make a good budget Christmas tree for 2010!

My Year in Photos – August 25th – “Making the most of the rain”

Because it was a bit of a wet-play day today, Robert and I decided to make the most of it by heading in to the rain to splash in some puddles. Both of us got dressed up in our waterproofs, with Robert sporting his uber-cute Bob the Builder wellys. We didn’t need to go far – a walk to the park at the end of our road revealed more puddles than Robert could ever have wished for, so we spent a good hour making the most of this puddley fun!

My Year in Photos – August 24th – “What a feeling – we’re camping on the ceiling”

A visit to Tesco for our pre-holiday supplies shopping today – and I was greeted as I walked in to the shop with this sight! As usual Tesco have stocked up ready for the Reading Festival crowds this weekend, though I can’t help thinking they might confuse a few festival-goers with this display. Knowing the sort of people that are usually roaming the supermarkets of Reading by the third day of the festival, I suspect a few over-baked revellers will try to get inside these tents – if you stand on the giant piles of beer you could probably make a good go of it, too!

My Year in Photos – August 22nd – “Keeping the kids entertained”

This is my brother-in-law Neil, doodling on the children’s activity sheet that they gave us at the pub, to keep the kids happy. It seems to be keeping him suitably amused!

My Year in Photos – August 21st – “Our first trip to the cinema”

Today was a day of firsts for Robert – his first trip on a train and his first visit to the cinema! And it all came about because we were a bit bored at home, when Sara decided we should all head to Basingstoke – the ultimate in spur-of-the-moment planning, not like us at all!

Toy Story 3 was excellent, Robert managed to sit through the entire thing quite happily – well, aside from a few trips around the mostly-empty cinema. Bloody hell it was expensive though! I know I’m probably a bit out-of-touch with cinema ticket prices, but three of us plus snacks cost over £30!?! It wasn’t like that back in my day…

Today’s photo, by the way, shows Robert enjoying the film from the comfort of the row behind us, where he spent the last 15 minutes of the movie. It was nice to be able to see how much he was enjoying it though!

My Year in Photos – August 20th – “Herding birds”

This afternoon we once again visited that staple in child-entertainment (at least here in Reading!) – Beale Park. However, this time we visited with some friends – Ros and Keith, and their children. We hadn’t seen them for absolutely ages, so it was nice to have a day out with them and all the kids. Highlight of the day for at least one child was seeing these baby… birds. I don’t know what type of bird they are, but their chicks were very cute, waddling about all over the place! They even managed to top the park train, which is an impressive feat considering!

My Year in Photos – August 19th – “Marketing #WIN!”

After my criticism of Sainsburys yesterday (which actually seems a bit harsh – quite a few people commented that there were probably reasons for this) I spotted a great use of cheeky marketing today, in the form of Lego. This Lego truck, which I spotted in ‘The Entertainer’ in Reading, is delivering tiny Lego boxes. Better still, they are all real Lego models you can buy – including the truck itself! Now THAT is clever marketing…

My Year in Photos – August 18th – “Marketing bargain #FAIL”

I’ve got the next 6 days off (a warm-up to our holiday in France in a week-and-a-half’s time!) so Robert and I headed out to Sainsburys this morning, to do the weekly shop. It was there that I spotted this sort-of marketing #fail…

As you can see, Sainsburys are trumpeting the insane value of these DVDs – “From £3 each” it says on the sign. But as you can clearly see (or at least you can if you click on the image), a lot of the DVDs are even cheaper than that, some at just £1. So why would you not put THAT on the sign?! Seemed a bit crazy to me…
