My Year in Photos – September 7th – “Holiday mess”
I spent most of today either in the car on the way to, or coming home from, Birmingham. So that didn’t really make a very interesting photo! So I instead turned my attention to some of the detritus left over from our holiday, which currently litters our house. Including this rake, which came from the bucket-and-spade set we bought for Robert in the Carnac market. They are reminding me of the holiday, but in a nice way. Roll on Christmas! :D

I spotted this confusing sight on my walk back to my car this evening – actually one of many amusing sights I saw, so I’ve got a choice for a change! The thing that confused me was whether I was being offered this lovely mixing bowl to take away, or if there had once been something else inside the bowl which I was being offered – some eggs perhaps? The bowls themselves were quite nice, so I was very tempted – but I could just imagine some housewife watching at the window, chasing me down the road with a rolling pin when I stole her bowls…!
My Year in Photos – August 27th – “Roof boxing”
Well, my predicted roof box stress actually turned out to be fairly stress-free – the Thule we bought wasn’t cheap, but it was certainly nice and easy to fit!
If you think it looks wonky, PLEASE don’t tell me – I spent ages trying to straighten the bastard up so I’m a little paranoid about it…!
My Year in Photos – August 26th – “Is it Christmas already?!”
Following my realisation yesterday that it was only (!) four months until Christmas, today I spotted what may well be the oldest Christmas tree in the UK – or perhaps an early Christmas tree for somebody very miserly? It’s actually been on this house’s balcony for 8 months looking like this, and I only remembered it was there as I left work today. I reckon if they put a few bits of tinsel on it, that could make a good budget Christmas tree for 2010!
My Year in Photos – August 25th – “Making the most of the rain”
Because it was a bit of a wet-play day today, Robert and I decided to make the most of it by heading in to the rain to splash in some puddles. Both of us got dressed up in our waterproofs, with Robert sporting his uber-cute Bob the Builder wellys. We didn’t need to go far – a walk to the park at the end of our road revealed more puddles than Robert could ever have wished for, so we spent a good hour making the most of this puddley fun!
My Year in Photos – August 24th – “What a feeling – we’re camping on the ceiling”

A visit to Tesco for our pre-holiday supplies shopping today – and I was greeted as I walked in to the shop with this sight! As usual Tesco have stocked up ready for the Reading Festival crowds this weekend, though I can’t help thinking they might confuse a few festival-goers with this display. Knowing the sort of people that are usually roaming the supermarkets of Reading by the third day of the festival, I suspect a few over-baked revellers will try to get inside these tents – if you stand on the giant piles of beer you could probably make a good go of it, too!
My Year in Photos – August 22nd – “Keeping the kids entertained”
This is my brother-in-law Neil, doodling on the children’s activity sheet that they gave us at the pub, to keep the kids happy. It seems to be keeping him suitably amused!
My Year in Photos – August 21st – “Our first trip to the cinema”
Today was a day of firsts for Robert – his first trip on a train and his first visit to the cinema! And it all came about because we were a bit bored at home, when Sara decided we should all head to Basingstoke – the ultimate in spur-of-the-moment planning, not like us at all!
Toy Story 3 was excellent, Robert managed to sit through the entire thing quite happily – well, aside from a few trips around the mostly-empty cinema. Bloody hell it was expensive though! I know I’m probably a bit out-of-touch with cinema ticket prices, but three of us plus snacks cost over £30!?! It wasn’t like that back in my day…
Today’s photo, by the way, shows Robert enjoying the film from the comfort of the row behind us, where he spent the last 15 minutes of the movie. It was nice to be able to see how much he was enjoying it though!
My Year in Photos – August 20th – “Herding birds”
This afternoon we once again visited that staple in child-entertainment (at least here in Reading!) – Beale Park. However, this time we visited with some friends – Ros and Keith, and their children. We hadn’t seen them for absolutely ages, so it was nice to have a day out with them and all the kids. Highlight of the day for at least one child was seeing these baby… birds. I don’t know what type of bird they are, but their chicks were very cute, waddling about all over the place! They even managed to top the park train, which is an impressive feat considering!
My Year in Photos – August 19th – “Marketing #WIN!”
After my criticism of Sainsburys yesterday (which actually seems a bit harsh – quite a few people commented that there were probably reasons for this) I spotted a great use of cheeky marketing today, in the form of Lego. This Lego truck, which I spotted in ‘The Entertainer’ in Reading, is delivering tiny Lego boxes. Better still, they are all real Lego models you can buy – including the truck itself! Now THAT is clever marketing…
