My Year in Photos – September 28th – “The balloon magnet tree”
I think today’s photo marks the third – possibly fourth – time this year when I have spotted balloons trapped in this tree or one of the ones near it. I’m beginning to wonder what makes people let go of their balloons when they walk underneath this tree in particular…
My Year in Photos – September 27th – “Our next dot-com millionaire?”

My Year in Photos – September 27th – "Our next dot-com millionaire?", originally uploaded by henweb.
I certainly hope so! I got home this evening to be greeted by Robert sat at our computer desk, pretending to type (and asking me “Where the diamond game?” – I have no idea what that means!) and Sara upstairs getting his bath ready. I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself as he once again discovered a strange keyboard shortcut that I’d never seen before – as he has done so many times in the past. Take THAT Bill Gates…!
My Year in Photos – September 26th – “Quad-Rob”
We spent our Sunday in Hereford at my cousin Mark’s house – as we had been the day before too. A generally lazy day included a wander down to their orchard to raid the apple trees – helped out by Mark’s quad bike, which we used to transport our plentiful bounty back to the house. Robert and I had a ride around the fields on it too, which obviously made a good impression on Robs – he immediately clambered back on and tried to start it himself!
My Year in Photos – September 25th – “National TRUST – a first!”
Sara and I were AMAZED today – whilst looking round the National Trust property Berrington Hall – as the staff were very… trusting. Usually, walking round a National Trust property with a toddler is a recipe for disaster – “Don’t touch that”, “Keep him away from this” and “Please make sure you don’t go in there” are usually in fine supply. But Berrington Hall seems to be staffed in a different way – as you can see from the photo above. Robert was actually asked if he wanted to get up on the bed in the master bedroom – and even ENCOURAGED to bounce on it! Good work Berrington Hall staff!!
My Year in Photos – September 24th – “Horsing around in Hereford”
Today’s photo was the very first shot I took on our arrival in Hereford this evening. The first shot of around 250 I took over the weekend…! While we were waiting for Mark and Fran to hear our arrival (they’ve got quite a big house, and only one small doorbell!) we showed Robert the horses – horses he had been looking forward to seeing all week!
My Year in Photos – September 23rd – “Full house? Yahoo!”
After two days in Southwark, I spent Thursday morning at the UK headquarters of Yahoo!, where I (along with my colleague Grant) was giving a talk to the Financial Services Forum. A room full of investment banks, insurers, retail banks and stock-n-shares folk. There were more acronyms than I’ve had hot dinners, and half of it went over my head, but our presentation seemed to go well so I was happy. Yahoo!’s offices are pretty nice too.
My Year in Photos – September 22nd – “Mooooooooooo”
Today’s photo is of a sight I used to see every day, but which I rarely get the pleasure of seeing these days. It’s a mural of some cows, painted on the side of the building next to where we used to live, here in Reading. It’s actually on the side of one of the buildings which make up Reading’s Cattle Market and Auction space, hence the cows – it’s really nicely painted, and to my knowledge nobody has ever sullied it with any graffiti or crap like that. Good work, Reading!
My Year in Photos – September 21st – “Walking in SouthWARK”
I spent today in London, south of the Thames – or Southwark to be precise. Note to self: Don’t pronounce it “SOUTH-WARK” – people get funny about that. Anyway, the area we are doing our training in is lovely – just down the road from the ‘Young Vic’, in a ‘creative space’ that the actors often use for their rehearsals, apparently. The street opposite the hall (pictured) is really picturesque and quaint – despite apparently being very recently built. It struck me as a quite nice place to live – though I’m probably completely wrong!
My Year in Photos – September 20th – “Strange paths to travel”
I’m afraid today was another of those photo-lite days, when you get to about 5.30 and realise you’ve seen absolutely nothing worthy of a photo all day. So as usual I ended up taking a photo of something I saw on my way home. Yes, it really was THAT kind of day!
My Year in Photos – September 19th – “Berry, berry cool”
Since we’d not been out much this weekend, we spent Sunday afternoon walking in the grounds around Basildon Park – a National Trust property near us that has recently opened again after some improvements. Seeing as Robert is only two, we didn’t think it was worth taking in round the house, so instead we opted to take a long leisurely walk through the woods and fields around the house, which was really lovely. Along the way we spotted lots of different berrys and plants, including these bad boys. My wife tells me they are called Rowan Berries, but I’m not convinced – at least after some casual Google image searching. Anybody have an opinion?
